The Sidney Street Cafe garden encompasses over 100 yards of raised beds along the perimeter of our parking lot. The garden’s entire yield ends up on the menu, and each station in our kitchen is responsible for the upkeep of its own garden bed. In an effort to help foster the community, we welcome our Benton Park neighbors to pick fresh fruits and vegetables freely from the garden on the honor system. Joseph Slattery helped us build the garden, and now we grow more than 50 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Depending on the time of year, you might find anything from zucchini, turnips, okra, sassafras, micro greens, collards, tomatoes, squash, and everything in between.
We are proud to work with local elementary schools and the Hoover YMCA to empower young people through education and give them a stake in the community. Classes tour the garden and learn hands-on about what we grow, basic gardening practices, and even how to make delicious healthy meals straight from the garden!
